Citizens Caring 4 Clearlake has been extra busy this spring and early summer with an ongoing initiative tackling one of the worst areas for litter, blight, and illegal dumping in the Clearlake area: the notoriously trashy Sulphur Bank Drive. Through ongoing community cleanup efforts and the forthcoming installation of security cameras at the major dump areas in cooperation with local law enforcement and the city’s Board of Supervisors, Citizens Caring 4 Clearlake is once again making major progress in keeping Clearlake and the surrounding areas free from unsightly and demoralizing trash and litter. Sulphur Bank Drive, which branches out away from Clearlake and skirts around the tantalizingly blue Borax Lake, has long been a popular site for illegal dumping of everything from furniture to appliances and even unwanted pets. CC4C is taking measures to change that for the better.

For those who aren’t familiar, Citizens Caring 4 Clearlake is a non-profit volunteer network, under North Coast Opportunities, created to help rid Clearlake of litter and blight. They share the gratifying experience of promoting and sustaining the beauty of Clearlake through education and volunteer action, while building and strengthening a local, actively engaged community.
CC4C’s Barbara Christwitz along with neighborhood community members have been instrumental to the Sulphur Bank Initiative, working tirelessly in cooperation with Supervisors Sabatier and Crandall to get surveillance cameras installed at the major dump sites along Sulphur Bank Dr. They are scheduled to be up and live by mid-July, so if you’re thinking about leaving trash on Sulphur Bank Dr. instead of taking it to the dump, you may want to think again! As awareness of the cameras spreads through the community, Christwitz hopes that this will be a game-changer for keeping this picturesque road clean and beautiful for all to enjoy

If you’re a Clearlake citizen and are having difficulty getting large household items to the dump to be disposed of or recycled properly, please reach out to CC4C. They have dump vouchers, and can sometimes help with the transportation of large items on a case-by-case basis. CC4C’s long-term vision is to grow its trash diversion efforts so that ultimately, not as much garbage ends up on our streets and in our neighborhoods in the first place.
